- on October 12, 2011
Help save lives from breast cancer on Sunday, Oct. 23, by participating in the second annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer®, a non-competitive walk that starts and ends at the Capitol in downtown Topeka. The event will honor breast cancer survivors, educate people about steps they can take to reduce their risk or find breast cancer early, and raise funds to help end this disease.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Kansas hopes to raise $135,000 and recruit 1,915 walkers from across the state for a day of “fun-raising” for this very important cause. In 2011, more than 250 Making Strides events will be held across the country. Individuals of all ages are welcome to participate. Making Strides events have no registration fee. Participants are encouraged to raise money online or collect donations to turn in on the day of the event, with a goal of $100 per walker.
“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just the name of an event. It represents the progress we are making together to defeat this disease,” explains Stephanie Weiter, regional vice president in Kansas for the American Cancer Society. “Making Strides is about passion; it’s about prevention; and it’s about remembering and celebrating those who been touched by breast cancer. We look forward to seeing folks from all across Kansas at this important event on Oct. 23rd in Topeka.”
Funds raised through this event will support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or finding it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking research; and by fighting back by encouraging lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011 Capitol Grounds in Downtown Topeka Registration starts at 1 p.m. The walk begins at 2 p.m.
