The Lawrence Hunger Project is still in great need of donations to fund the upcoming volunteer food packaging event on Oct. 16, World Food Day. Donations can be made at www.numanainc.com/donate by clicking on "University of Kansas."
The volunteer spots for our event have been fulfilled, but we still need your help to put on a successful event to package food to send to the Dadaab refugee camp in the Horn of Africa. Any amount helps, but we do have a large gap to fill before reaching our goal of $30,000, having raised only $8,321. Please help by donating today and getting others to donate as well! Remember that $30 feeds 100 people, and $1,000 feeds over 3,333 people.
A quick reminder of key facts about the Lawrence Hunger Project:
- The goal of the Lawrence Hunger Project is to raise hunger-awareness in our community through a hands-on food-packaging event and local food drive. We hope to package 100,000 meals and need to raise $30,000 to meet this goal. The event will be held on World Food Day, Oct. 16, 2011, at Lawrence High School. We have filled all the volunteer spots, but desperately need donations to reach our goal.
- This is the first such event here in Lawrence. It is a collaboration between KU students, the Lawrence community, and Numana. The food-packaging event is part of the SWIPE (State-Wide Packaging Event) coordinated at colleges throughout Kansas through Numana.
- Numana, the international hunger relief organization based in El Dorado, Kan., stages volunteer food-packaging events throughout the country and sends the meals to areas where international food insecurity is greatest. Working with over 135,000 volunteers coast-to-coast, Numana has sent over 22.5 million meals to countries such as Haiti, Colombia, Zambia, Liberia and Mexico.
- The food packaged at our event will be sent to the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya. This refugee camp is serving a huge population in the Horn of Africa currently experiencing severe famine. The meals packaged will consist of rice, freeze-dried beans, a vegetarian protein, and a vitamin/nutrient mixture specifically created for undernourished people.
