Dot Nary will present and lead a discussion on "Disability Advocacy is Everyone’s Job: How Can We Do It Better?" October 18th at Independence, Inc. This event is open to the public.
Dot Nary worked at several independent living centers in New York before enrolling at KU to earn graduate degrees. Her research interests focus on health promotion, independent living, and advocacy skills for people with disabilities. These interests stem from her beliefs that people need to be healthy in order to benefit from civil rights laws and to live independently; and that advocacy skills are essential life skills for people with disabilities.
Dot recently received a fellowship to study the effect of non-visitable homes on people using wheelchairs. Presently, Dot teaches courses on disability and social advocacy and change at Washburn University. And she will teach similar courses at the University of Kansas and Rockhurst University in the spring of 2012.
