Fluoride varnish clinics will be available again this month at the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department. Provided by the Douglas County Dental Clinic, the first clinic will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today. Another clinic is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16 from 8:45 a.m. to noon.
The clinics will take place at the Health Department, 200 Maine St. in Lawrence. All children, ages 6 months to 18 who are uninsured or are on Medicaid or Healthwave, are eligible. A parent or guardian must be present to sign a consent form for the treatment and to provide the child’s medical card information. There is no charge and no appointment is needed — clients will be served on a first come, first served basis.
Fluoride varnish is 5 percent sodium fluoride resin that is painted on teeth to help make the enamel stronger and more resistant to dental decay. This temporary resin is held in close contact to the tooth surface for four to six hours to allow absorption. It can be brushed off the teeth after a few hours or left on the teeth overnight.

flouride is poison. you parents need to heed such. keep your kids safe & stay away from these kinds of 'freebies'. you want good dental health for your kids? keep them away from candies, soda pop, doughnuts, & all the rest of the crap out there. when you do the enamel on teeth stays healthy. it's coca-cola that ruins tooth enamel [for one]. be healthy by what you avoid. beware the poisons.

All children can benefit from the use of fluoride varnish, especially those who are at a greater risk of developing caries. Fluoride varnish is a safe and effective way to help prevent dental caries. It has a higher concentration of fluoride than gels, foams, rinses and pastes, but is less toxic to children because less of the product is swallowed during the application. Fluoride varnish quickly adheres to teeth and over time is slowly released to the tooth surface, promoting tooth remineralization. There have been numerous evidence based studies showing that fluoride varnish application is safe and has reduced the incidence of early childhood caries.
