Thanks to generous donations from Livewell Lawrence, Vinland Valley Nursery and Cottin’s Hardware & Rental, Central Garden at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School, 1400 Massachusetts Street, is up and growing. A HUGE thank you goes out to Terry Frankenfeld, for installing the garden fence, to McCray Lumber for donating all of the cedar fence posts and to Billy Construction for setting all of the fence posts!
Now that the heavy work is done for the season, there is still plenty of fun to be had. If you are not doing anything this Tuesday or Wednesday morning (June 28 & 29), make plans to attend the Central Garden Fence Painting Party. Central students, along with ten or twelve Roger Hill Center volunteers, will try their hand at “white washing” the fence. Young and old, experienced and non-experienced, students and non-students are encouraged to stop by and help from 9:00 am – 2:30 pm, both Tuesday and Wednesday. Paint will be plentiful, but supplies will be limited, so bring your own roller or brush to help with the job.
Volunteers are also needed on a weekly basis to work in the garden as Central students hone their skills at weeding, watering and harvesting. Parents are encouraged to send their Liberty Memorial Central Middle School sixth, seventh and eighth graders to work in the garden on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 am until 11:30 am and Saturdays from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. There is no need to sign up and everyone is welcome. Come for a few hours or come every day! Laura Leonard will be on hand to supervise, direct and/or educate anyone who shows up. In addition to gardening throughout the summer, on Thursdays, from 3:00 pm – 6:30 pm, students will take their freshly harvested produce over to the back parking lot at Cottin’s Hardware & Rental, 1832 Massachusetts Street to sell the fruits of their labor at Cottin’s Hardware Farmers Market. Student and parent volunteers are needed to set up and work the market booth.
If you can’t participate in the garden work or market vending, consider stopping by to purchase Central Garden produce at the market. It is only through generous donations and market sales that Central Garden will continue to grow in the months and years to come!
More information about Central Garden can be found on the Central Smart Choices Garden website, on the Central Garden Facebook site or by emailing Laura Leonard at lleonard@usd497.org.

Many thanks to the hardworking Youth Volunteer Corps kiddos who white-washed the fence and pulled weeds in the garden! Nice work!
