School is out and the garden is in! For the first time ever, students from Liberty Memorial Central Middle School will pack up the produce they have grown in their newly expanded garden and head to Cottin's Hardware Farmers Market to share their bounty with a few lucky market goers.
Since 2008, Central Junior High School has maintained a school garden for the purpose of educational enhancement. Through a generous grant from the LiveWell Lawrence foundation and donations from several local businesses, Central Garden was expanded this past April. The new 4200 SQFT garden is used as a welcoming space for all students and serves as a learning tool for science, math, English, and liberal arts curriculums.
Central students are responsible for the planning, planting, growing and harvesting of the garden produce. Throughout the summer, students are meeting in Central Garden Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30 am - 11:30 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm to learn the ins and outs of gardening and more. Any student who will be attending LM Central next year is welcome (and strongly encouraged) to participate. Most of the garden produce is slated to be used in the school cafeteria and classroom, but students will sell excess garden produce through out the summer to help raise funds to support the garden.
Cottin's Hardware Farmers Market is held in the back parking lot of Cottin's Hardware & Rental at 1832 Massachusetts Street, Lawrence, Thursdays, from 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm.

That reminds me, that Farmer's Market makes 19th and Mass a traffic nightmare during rush hour. Who approved this?
