Last week I was walking around the Hy-Vee on Clinton Parkway with Kylene Etzel, Hy-Vee dietitian. The store is huge. Taking a couple of loops around the perimeter of the store would be a great way to squeeze in a quick workout before you pick up dinner. The store includes a dining area and a variety of prepared foods including a deli, salad bar, Chinese, Italian and traditional American foods.
We are close to adding Hy-Vee to LiveWell EatWell. As a result of our discussion with managers, whole wheat wraps, pizza crust and 1% milk may be coming soon. In the Chinese area all vegetables are cooked first in water then added to dishes which allows them to use a very small amount of oil for many dishes. Steamed vegetables, salads with fresh cut vegetables and fruit salad are available in the American food area.
If you are discouraged about how to get your family to eat more nutritious foods or if you or a family member have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, talk with Kylene. She can walk with you through the store to answer all your questions about the foods you buy for your family.
