At a summit for the Partnership for a Healthier America on 11/29/11 Hyatt Hotels made a commitment to change their menus by 2016. They committed to;
- Reduce the calorie, sodium and added sugar content by 10% across all food menus.
- Include at least 2 healthy menu items that cost the same or less than similar items on the menu.
- Include at least 5 menu items for each meal will contain a locally produced food product or ingredient. -
Researchers at Penn State have found calorie content in menus can be reduced up to 30% before consumers notice a difference. Many main dishes at restaurants have 800-1000+ calories so even 10% adds up quickly. Sodium content is often 1500-2000 mg/serving. Consumers will not notice the change and will reap the benefits of less sugar, sodium and calories. What a deal!
Hopefully restaurants where we can afford to eat everyday will follow Hyatt's lead.
