My husband and I just returned from a road trip to California and back. I had to share the picture of the waffle at our Amarillo hotel breakfast buffet. Only in Texas would the waffle iron have the shape of the state.
I cannot look at a menu now without checking for smaller portions, whole grains and side dish options. One of our stops was at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We had been forewarned that the portion sizes in the dining room were huge. We split a chicken pasta dish. I was too embarrassed to take a picture of the full serving as it was delivered to a table nearby. The meal was served on a platter and it could have served a family of four.
I have to say I was disappointed to not have more options for smaller portions. We were charged $3-4 for splitting meals at a few restaurants but it was still cheaper than ordering a second entree. Plus I hate to throw away food. I appreciated Subway when we were looking for a fast food option. It helped when I was craving vegetables to load up on spinach, tomatoes, and green peppers. Also I could catch up on the calorie and fat content of some of their subs by reading my napkin.

Hilarious photo, Trish! You're right...only in Texas. I'm embarking on a cross-country trip soon, and you've inspired me to take photos of food along the way. You've also inspired me to pack almond butter and jelly sandwiches.

The trouble with those big portions on the road is you can't take a doggie bag unless you have refrigeration or a very well organized cooler.
I wish there were more salad bar-type places where they charge you based on the weight of your plate.

Marilyn & Jane-
We did pack PB & jelly and took a cooler for fruit. I needed a break from restaurants & to save money.
I agree with Marilyn, I wish we paid based on serving size. When we were at the North Rim people were piling on the self serve ice cream because you were charged by the container size not the weight.
