LiveWell Lawrence coalition sets 2016-17 Policy Platform

LiveWell Lawrence recently announced its 2016-17 Policy Platform priorities. The platform includes a specific goal for each work group to work toward in the coming year. Chair Laurie Comstock said the Policy Platform helps work groups set goals around changes to policies, systems and environments that drive health outcomes.

Encourage and support the City of Lawrence in implementing three or more recommendations from the recent Pedestrian-Bicycle Issues Task Force Report, including the creation of a transportation commission, establishment of an equitable and practical sidewalk repair policy and construction of at least one remaining segment of the Lawrence Loop. — Supported by Healthy Built Environment Work Group

Support the downtown grocery store as an advocacy priority and establish healthy food pantries and feeding sites to assure healthy food is available to vulnerable citizens. This will include promoting implementation of choice-based systems, increasing percentage of healthful foods offered, developing marketing materials for healthy food drives, promoting SNAP enrollment, increasing capacity for storing and distributing healthy foods and recognition of healthy pantry efforts with the FuelGood brand. — Supported by Healthy Food for All Work Group

Assist USD 497 with the adoption of Alliance for a Healthier Generation (AHG), support/organize community projects that support school gardens and Farm to School, provide wellness policy drawn from AHG that can be adopted by any business, community organization or early childhood center and assist area private schools in adopting AHG. — Supported by Healthy Kids Work Group

Assist in the passing of Tobacco21 in Lawrence. — Supported by Tobacco-Free Living Work Group

Provide guidelines/technical assistance for healthy food and beverage policies and offer a WorkWell Kansas workshop on well-being and provide additional training for this health priority. — Supported by WorkWell Lawrence
