Scarecrow Contest & Auction Raises Money For Local Garden Projects
- on October 24, 2013
Don't miss the Second Annual Scarecrow Contest & Auction, Friday, October 25, 2013 from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Seed Co Building, 826 Pennsylvania Street in Lawrence.
This year's Scarecrow Silent Auction will be held in conjunction with the October Final Friday events in Lawrence as well as Lawrence's Annual Art Walk! There will be over two dozen scarecrows available for adoption. Scarecrows are great guardians for gardens and orchards and also make wonderful yard art for non-gardeners. Some scarecrows are even appropriate for indoor installations!
Scarecrows can (and should) be displayed year round. In the garden, in the yard, by the trees or under the eaves! Be careful where you put them - scarecrows placed appropriately may scare you and your neighbors every now and again!
Proceeds from this year's Scarecrow Contest and Auction will go directly to support four local garden projects including Central Garden at Liberty Memorial Middle School, New York Elementary School Garden, South Middle School Garden and the Lawrence Community Shelter Garden.
Each of these gardens is a non-profit entity designed to encourage and support healthy food choices among students and adults alike. Foods grown in the school gardens make their way into the school's cafeteria and onto the students plates, helping to encourage a healthy appreciation for fresh, local produce and a better understanding of where our food comes from. Food from the Lawrence Community Shelter is used on site and is a direct benefit for shelter residents.
Money raised from the auction of the scarecrows, as well as from the contest entry fees, is used to support garden projects by providing much needed funds for supplies and garden improvements. Last year, thanks to several wonderful contest entries, including Pat Slimmer's (Slimmer's Automotive) incredible "If I Only Had A Brain" scarecrow sculpture, The Scarecrow Contest and Auction was able to raise over $600 which went directly to Central Garden and the Four Winds Native Center Garden Project. This year's auction is expected to raise at least twice as much!
Scarecrow judging will commence at 5:00 pm. The top six Scarecrow entrants will receive a $25 gift Certificate donated by the following local businesses:
Cottin's Hardware & Rental
Dempsey's Burger Pub
Growing Food, Growing Health
On The Rocks
Vinland Valley Nursery
Please thank these local businesses, as well as Slimmer's Automotive, The Lawrence Social Service League and The Seed Co Building for their support of gardens and healthy foods!
The auction will start at 5:00 pm, with bids being accepted between 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Bidding will end sharply at 8:00 pm, at which time bid winners are encouraged to take their new friends home.
Free apple bobbing, treats and beverages will be offered throughout the night. Live music will be provided by several local musicians, including WheretheWildThingsAre and Heidi Gluck!
After the event, unclaimed scarecrows will be transported to Cottin's Hardware & Rental, where they will be made comfortable until Monday night. At that time, unclaimed scarecrows will be pressed into service or re-appropriated, as deemed applicable by the Scarecrow Committee.
