Independence Inc. is providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity to use its free light box. According to Dr. Stephen Ilardi, there are six steps that are used to help prevent Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). One of these six steps includes getting sufficient sunlight exposure to keep the body’s clock in sync. The light box will be available starting on Nov. 28 and will continue until the winter months are complete.
Research suggests sitting in front of the light box at the same time everyday of the week will have the best results. Due to the fact that insomnia can be a side effect of light box if sat in front of in the late afternoon, the box will only be available until 2 p.m. on weekdays. Independence Inc. is open Monday through Friday from 8 to 5 p.m.
The light box is a free service, but appointments are required. An individual can set up an appointment by calling 785-841-0333 ext. 105. If transportation is required, please mention this when calling to register. Rides are a $2 donation each way and must be scheduled in advance.
