Health Care Access Clinic appoints Evans as Medical Director

Lawrence, Kansas – May 12, 2014 - Health Care Access Clinic approved the appointment of Karen Evans, DO, as Medical Director at the monthly Board of Directors meeting on April 17, 2014. She will assume the post on June 1, 2014.

Evans is a family physician at Mt. Oread Family Practice and has volunteered at the clinic since December 2010 and has served on the Health Care Access Clinic Board of Directors since April of 2013. Shelly Wakeman, Executive Director of the clinic, is excited to have Evans on board as Medical Director. “We are astounded at her medical acumen and efficiency and are thrilled beyond words that she will serve as our Medical Director.”

Evans succeeds David Goering, MD, a hospitalist at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Goering held the Medical Director position for 9 years while also working as a volunteer provider and serving on the clinic’s Board of Directors. “We wish to express our gratitude to Dr. Goering for his years of kind and caring leadership at the clinic,” said Wakeman. “We acknowledge the significant role he played in the recent history of the clinic and extend our heartfelt thanks for his contributions. We look forward to having him continue to serve our patients as a volunteer provider and are excited about what is in store under Dr. Evans’ leadership.”

The role of medical director at Health Care Access is a volunteer post that has, in the past been filled by other Lawrence physicians, including Brad Phipps, MD, Matt Lewis, MD, and Maggie Carpenter, MD. The medical director fulfills an important collaborative role with the nurse practitioners and serves both as a practice resource and link to our primary hospital partner, Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
