Heartland Community Health Center is hosting a Diabetes Screening Day tomorrow as part of National Diabetes Alert Day.
More than 164,000 people in Kansas have diabetes, including 8,100 in Douglas County.
It is estimated that one-third of people with diabetes do not know they have the disease. That means more than 38,000 Douglas County residents might currently be at risk for complications resulting from untreated diabetes.
Anyone can walk in from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow to receive a diabetes risk assessment, hypertension assessment and a hemoglobin test for $5.
HCHC also will be handing out free diabetes care and prevention education materials. Each participant will have the opportunity to schedule free nutrition and exercise counseling.
Diabetes Screening Day will be held at HCHC, located on the east end of the Riverfront Mall, near Seventh and New York streets.
