On November 1, 2011, Heartland Community Health Center announced the public phase of its fundraising campaign, The Community Health Center Project. The campaign is aimed at raising $82,000 in order to increase its capacity and improve its data tracking methods.
After receiving news in August that its application to become a federally funded Community Health Center had been denied, HCHC began the process of applying for Community Health Center Look-Alike status, which allows all of the revenue generating mechanisms a fully funded Community Health Center receives, except for a large annual grant. Community Health Centers are sustainable because of the program’s modes for generating revenue, such as enhanced Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements. There are over 1,000 Community Health Centers in the United States, including 13 in Kansas. In Kansas, 94 percent of those who use Community Health Centers subsist below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.
