The Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority have received $100,000 to continue to provide rental assistance to low-income residents with serious and persistent mental illness.
The funds, provided by the Kansas Housing Resources Corp., will be available Nov. 1. They will be administered through the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority.
It is estimated the funding will help 15 to 20 families during a two-year period. The awarded funds can be used only for rent subsidy to private landlords on behalf of eligible clients. There’s a list of 18 criteria that a client must meet in order to be considered for funding, which includes being a Douglas County resident and being diagnosed with persistent mental illness.
Since 1993, these agencies have provided subsidy awards for 277 households totaling $1.4 million through a joint program called Community Support Services HOME Tenant Based Rental Assistance.
