In 2010, twenty-one people from Douglas County died by suicide. That's a lot of people - parents, nieces, co-workers, siblings, spouses/partners, grandparents, friends, classmates, nieces/nephews, aunts/uncles - and a lot of loved ones left behind asking why, asking what could I have done to prevent this, feeling sad, feeling scared, and more.
Saturday November 19, 2011 is International Survivors of Suicide Day. The Healing After Suicide group of Headquarters Counseling Center is sponsoring a community workshop in the Brady Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont, in downtown Lawrence, from 11:30am - 2:30pm.
The workshop will include a candle-lighting memorial led by Rose Foster, viewing of a national broadcast from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention www.afsp.org, and discussion with a local panel including Capt. Mike Pattrick, Lawrence Police Department; Jack Winters, retired USD 497 Social Worker; Bryan Culver, and Erica Fox Zabusky.
Participants will gain understanding of common reactions to losing a loved one to suicide, and suggestions for healing from that loss - including by remembering what you did right! This workshop is free and open to any interested person.
