On a spring-like winter day, some people in a Downtown Lawrence office building are providing "life support" to those who reach out by phone, by email, or in-person. Headquarters Counseling Center is the name on that office door.
The center provides a wide range of services to the Douglas County community: referrals for health and human service programs, Children's Safety Education, Healing After Suicide bereavement group, and immediately-available counseling for any life concern of any age person.
"Thanks for all that you do and are. It means a lot to have you and Headquarters available." That note from someone who used the center is a reminder of the importance of the services, which are provided at no cost, 24 hours daily.
Throughout the 42 years of Headquarters Counseling Center, caring volunteers have been a key component. People who are well-suited for this role are people who are experienced listeners for their friends and families.
A training program for new volunteer counselors begins soon. People interested in entering that training to become one of those "life support" people are invited to a meeting Thursday 2/2/12 from 6:00 - 7:15pm at the Lawrence Public Library.
