Whether you're looking for a way to kill some time, de-stress now that the holiday season is upon us or to keep your brain in shape, the New York Times has posted several of their puzzles online.
Among these puzzles are, of course, crosswords. This past year I have become a daily crossworder, filling out the puzzle each day in the university's newspaper. Yet, I do not claim to be a crossword genius; I've found that I'm accustomed to the style of the university's crossword, but when I switch to other papers they can be more challenging.
My advice to those wanting to pick up the hobby is to start with one paper's puzzles and branch out from there. It truly is entertaining and you feel so smart finishing them!
While I prefer the paper-version of puzzles, online you can solve the ones linked above from the nytimes.com or from USA Today's puzzles page where they post their crossword and other puzzles daily.
And if you weren't yet convinced of the benefits of puzzling, read this intriguing New York Times article about H.M., a man who underwent brain surgery that left him incapable of forming new memories, yet had a crossword obsession that allowed him to make new mental connections and learn new facts.
