Community members had the opportunity to learn about men’s health issues and shoot hoops in Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday, June 26 when the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association hosted the first Hoops for Men’s Health event.
The event included a health fair, luncheon with KU Athletic Director, Sheahon Zenger, and a free throw competition in Allen Fieldhouse. “Hoops for Men’s Health was great fun for all who experienced shooting hoops at Allen Fieldhouse and gained good health information from health care providers,” said Ted Haggart, President of Douglas County Bank and a member of the LMHEA Board of Directors. “Hoops for Men’s Health was a very positive step forward for men’s health.”
Health vendors from around the community were available to provide various screenings and information for men and their families and Allen Fieldhouse was buzzing throughout the afternoon as multiple teams took their spot on the free throw line to compete in the free throw contest.
• 1st Place – Stream Team - Dr. Jon Heeb (member of LMHEA Board of Directors), Kevin Harrell, Kitcha Paranjothi and Matt Shroyer
• 2nd Place – Briggs Auto – Eric Giroux, JW Roeder, Scott Bond and Joe Flynn
• 3rd Place – George Herman Brutes – John Parker, Matt Parker, Daniel Parker and Brad Eland
Channel 6, KLWN and Lawrence Journal World also had a chance to test out their free throw skills in the media challenge. The Lawrence Journal World team came out on top at the end of the afternoon.
The LMH Endowment Association was pleased with the overall turnout for Hoops for Men’s Health and hopes to continue with the event again next year. “With this being our first year hosting Hoops for Men’s Health, I think we had great participation,” said Kathy Clausing-Willis, LMHEA Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “It’s very important to promote men’s health and we look forward to having this event again in the future to do just that.”
