Lawrence event to include screening of 'Minds on the Edge,' panel discussion about mental illness

Mental illness will be the topic of community event at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Lawrence Public Library auditorium, 707 Vt.

There will be a screening of the one-hour documentary, "Minds on the Edge: Facing Mental Illness," which explores severe mental illness in America. It looks at the ethical issues as well as systemic flaws in program and policy design, service coordination and resource allocation. It then looks at some innovative solutions.

A panel discussion will follow the screening to talk about how to improve treatment options and support for people with mental illness in the Lawrence community. Representatives from mental health, law enforcement and media as well as a mental health consumer and family member will serve on the panel. Rick Cagan, executive director of the Kansas chapter of National Alliance on Mental Illness, will moderate the discussion.

The event is being hosted by the Douglas County affiliates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, and the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.

For more information about the program, call NAMI at 842-7271 or 766-2512.
