These past few weeks have been FULL of fast and furious activity. On April 2, we built our beautiful new Growing Food, Growing Health Gardens at Sunset Hill and Hillcrest Elementary.
We had so many wonderful volunteers. Over 50 parents, community members, neighbors, and students came between the two schools. Wow, productive day at the Gardens! Thanks to Anderson Rentals for donation four wheelbarrows for the day, we really needed the extra help.
Yesterday, took a field trip to our off-site farm location. We spent the day planting onions and potatoes on a beautiful day on a beautiful farm. Dan Phelps, the West and Sunset Hill Garden Coordinator, gave a tour of MAD Farm / Wild Onion Farm and connected our student gardeners to a whole new level of food production. From hand tilling to tractors, the students saw what a working vegetable farm feels like as opposed to our urban school gardens.
Looking forward to all of our upcoming adventures like taking over the front of The Merc, selling at the Thursday Lawrence Farmers' Markets, putting in apple and pear trees, raspberries, and blackberries, and providing West, Hillcrest, and Sunset Hill students with fresh, local, organic produce.

Love the pic of everyone on the tractor! What a great project — it's obviously growing by leaps and bounds!

Projects like this give us hope for the future of locally produced, healthy fresh food. It's great to see the kids learning and having fun with the gardens.

What great pictures. I am interested in more volunteer days as we were not able to help April 2nd. It is so great that there are so many more gardens this year. Keep up the hard work!
