As the season is winding down, I’ve been thinking a lot about my favorite memories of this year. Here they are, in no particular order.
Building a garden at Hillcrest Elementary. In case you haven't heard, I am a very proud Hillcrest grad. As my life has gone on, I have realized how unique my experience was at Hillcrest. I have grown to love that school and appreciate the time I spent there more and more. Returning to my roots to plant a bountiful garden was, as you can imagine, very fulfilling.
The Magical Raspberries of West Middle School. I’m not sure if it was the variety, the soil, or the love, but the raspberries we planted this year were truly impressive. Considering the difficult growing conditions, we have been especially thankful for the delicious samples we’ve enjoyed. The Baby Bunnies at Sunset Hill. Ok, full disclosure, bunnies are definitely garden pests. I did NOT like them when they feasted on our sweet potatoes, but they were sure adorable when we found them napping in the straw mulch. It was also a lesson in living within our existing ecosystem for our students and, as most things in the garden, a great teaching moment. We taught the kids how to catch a baby bunny, scold a baby bunny, and walk a baby bunny across the street to live (hopefully) in the park.
Growing Food Independence Day. We spent July 4 on Wild Onion/MAD Farm tending to our onions, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. The day, the setting, and the work were all picture perfect. We shared a great, local meal afterwards and captured some fairly amazing pictures.
Fall has a magical power that makes me forget the intense heat of the summer. When I think back through this year I don’t think of the grueling sun or heat wave, I think of these and so many other wonderful memories that we are still creating. Gosh, now I can’t wait for spring!
