COPE program helps caregivers

The COPE program -- Care of Persons with Dementia in their Environment -- seems to help caregivers, which reported an improved well-being, and dementia patients, whose functionality increased. HealthDay News reported on the study, which appeared in the Sept. 1 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The COPE program included up to 12 home or telephone contacts over four months by health professionals who assessed patient capabilities and deficits, obtained blood and urine samples, and trained families in home safety, task simplification and stress reduction.

Caregivers in the control group received three telephone calls and educational materials during the study period.

Brandon Woods at Alvamar and Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Are Working Together to Better Serve Senior Adults in Douglas County

Brandon Woods at Alvamar, a Five Star Senior Living Community and Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice, two strong community organizations announce the opening of a Douglas County Visiting Nurses satellite office on the Brandon Woods at Alvamar campus.

With the presence of Douglas County VNA on the Brandon Woods campus, Brandon Woods' clients and their families will experience a seamless transition of important services such as Medicare Certified Home Health Services and other private duty services. In addition, Douglas County VNA anticipates the office expansion will enable them to more efficiently serve the citizens in northern and western Douglas County.

"This relationship reinforces the important goal that both organizations fully embrace, and that is to assist senior adults in remaining their most independent in their homes while receiving needed health services," stated Jeff Merritt, Brandon Woods CEO.

Judith Bellome, CEO of Douglas County VNA adds, "I am excited because collaborations such as this are important in our community to ensure comprehensive services are available to senior adults."

Brandon Woods at Alvamar will continue to offer residents a choice of home health, hospice and other related service providers. Brandon Woods employs over 250 Associates and serves over 400 senior adults daily. Douglas County Visiting Nurses made 15,594 visits to citizens in Douglas and surrounding counties in 2009.

It’s not too often that businesses welcome competition, but there seems to be at least one exception in Lawrence.

That’s housing and care for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The city has only three facilities, which have room to care for a total of about 90 residents. The homes are consistently at or near capacity.

“There is virtually nothing,” said Kitty Shea, of the housing options. Shea, owner of Mindful Matters, works with families who are dealing with Alzheimer’s. She helps them locate financing, support groups and housing.

Shea is glad that Neuvant House of Lawrence is opening next week.

“I say, ‘Bring it. We need it,’ because Douglas County does not have the resources for the numbers that are coming for Alzheimer’s,” she said.

It's a good time to shop, compare Medigap plans

Changes in Medicare Supplement Plans will be coming June 1.

These are plans sold by private insurance companies to cover health care costs that are NOT benefits of Medicare. These commonly are called Medigap plans, and a majority of seniors have them.

“These changes will provide lower out-of-pocket expenses to consumers and give some additional benefits in ongoing plans,” said Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger.
