Here's a soundoff question from a reader:
Q: Does Lawrence have any free or low-cost transportation for seniors who are in wheelchairs and need to get to and from physical therapy appointments?
A: Brenda Brown, director of development and marketing for Independence Inc., a Lawrence nonprofit that provides assistance to people with disabilities, provided the following options:
• Independence Inc., 843-5576. It offers transportation from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays for a donation of $2 per ride. Medical trips to Kansas City and Topeka also are available at an additional cost. There are no age restrictions.
• Douglas County Senior Services, 865-6925. It offers transportation from 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays for residents 60 or older. Cost is $3 per ride. It also offers rides to Eudora and Lecompton.
• City of Lawrence’s T-Lift, 864-5438. It offers services from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday for $2 per ride.
• MTM Kansas Medical Transportation Program, 888-240-6497. It offers nonemergency medical transportation for the state’s Medicaid program.

Forgot to mention to Karrey that Independence, Inc. does require people 16 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult in order to ride on our transportation.

Thanks for the additional information and for providing the list. I commonly get calls from elderly residents who are seeking transportation options, especially to Kansas City for appointments.

MTM is good when it works. The article should also have said that you have to have fullfilled your medicaid spenddown to use it. And their contracted drivers have a bad habit of cancelling rides without letting the patient know.
