Judy Willett, national director of Village to Village Network, will be speaking about the village concept for older adults during a community meeting Thursday in Lawrence. The network was founded a couple of years ago to help communities start their own villages and sustain them.

There will be a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at the East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St., to gauge interest in starting a village in Lawrence.

A village is a new approach to aging in place that involves neighbors working together. Villages are membership-driven, nonprofit organizations that are run by volunteers and paid staff. They coordinate access to affordable services and programs to help keep older adults in their homes.

Among the speakers will be:

• Judy Willett, founding director of Beacon Hill Village in Boston and national director of Village to Village Network.

• Lawrence resident Bonnie Uffman, who is spearheading the Eastside Village Lawrence.

If you are interested in learning more but can't attend the meeting, contact Uffman at bonuff@gmail.com or 856-0057.

I'm all for keeping older people in their homes, especially if it means they aren't on the road. Or in the checkout line at Dillon's.

I'm really interested in this community-based concept, but can't go to the session. Will someone report on what was discussed?

Sorry for the delayed response, but I attended the meeting last night and there was a great turnout and everyone seemed enthusiastic about the concept. I plan to update the community as the organizers begin to build the village. Here's the link to last night's story: http://ljw.bz/NDF8Ju
