Is the emergency room always necessary?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov) notes that annually about 20 percent of adults make at least one visit to a hospital emergency department. Of the roughly 130 million visits each year to emergency rooms, fewer than 10 percent result in an inpatient stay.
