Vitamin D could help in fighting pediatric bone cancer
Hi Gabe,
Perhaps I should clarify Dr. Templeton's statement. She wasn't saying don't take vitamin D period. She just said that there hasn't been any study that links Vitamin D to preventing bone cancer.
I think some people could make the assumption that since Vitamin D helped in treating cancer it could help prevent it as well. And while that might very well be the case, no study has ever proven so.

Side effects of energy drinks cause spike in E.R. visits
No one mentioned prohibiting energy drinks. I think the key here is the last sentence in the story about the need for public awareness. There is the perception out there that these drinks don't have that much more caffeine than soda. And, some people drink them like they would soda. Or worse mix them with alcohol or drugs.
As a result, thousands of more people are showing up to emergency departments with complications.

Use holiday visits to check on aging parents
Hi Costello,
Thanks for your comments. And, how fortunate for you and your mother to be in such constant contact. I'm sure that is a gift for both of you. However, not everyone can be so close to their parents. Lots of families live apart for lots of different reasons and the holidays are the one time during the year when everyone comes together.
And, some of the folks I talked to said it might be the out-of-town children who are the first to recognize or take action on a health problem. Those who see their parents more regularly might not notice the gradual changes. But, to someone who has been away for six months those changes can be dramatic. I can think of examples in my family where that has been true.

Do you think parents should be allowed have their children opt out of school vaccines for philosophical reasons?
The poll is in reference to this story: http://wellcommons.com/groups/wellnes....
A group in Wichita is lobbying the state to allow a conscientious exemption for vaccines. In a written statement, they provided this information about why they want to opt out:
“Parents who are choosing to opt out or delay one, some or all of the required vaccinations have valid concerns and questions that are not being fully answered or resolved.”
Hope that helps. Thanks for the question.
