Part 3: Are low income people generous?
Otto:
I agree that lack of financial literacy and planning is a root cause of some people's need for emergency assistance. I wish that every 10th grader was required to understand credit, and how easy it is to get underwater on a loan.
This guy needs some time to downsize into his new reality. Meanwhile, I would have a hard time turning him away if he could not put food on the table today for his children. Should the kids starve because the parents made mistakes?
It does happen in our community. School personnel have seen kids going through the kitchen's trash to find food to eat over the weekend.

What's your favorite way to get exercise in the summer?
Dog Days. I walk rather than run. I enjoy the community spirit and work harder than I would on my own.

Karrey's story: On the move again after two hip replacements
Lawrence:
I've had plantar fasciitis for 8 years. I've tried ice, anti inflammatories, orthotics, cortisone shots, night splints, shockwave therapy, and more. A local ortho sugeon told me he would not do surgery because the risks are too high.
The most helpful thing for me has been replacing some of my walking with yoga. The deep, prolonged stretching you do when holding yoga poses stretched out my leg and foot muscles and maybe improved circulation. I'm not pain free, but I can do everything I want.

Wow. What a powerful example of how common cancer is. I can't imagine the degree of loss you have faced.
I agree, we need to beat this disease so that more can live and continue to love.

Part 3: Are low income people generous?
How refreshing to see this comment thread evolve from flippant one-liners to a balanced and reasoned discussion.
Jeremy, thanks for writing this series. You have obviously struck a chord with many.

How does collaboration impact community health?
Yep, I want to make progress, and I would take your argument one step further.
You say "we as a community have to change our individual habits to be able to strengthen the health of the community."
We also need to join together to spark collective MOVEMENTS that will change policies, systems and environments in ways that make it easier for all of us to stay healthy. A few agencies, no matter how effective, do not constitute a movement. You have to get dozens, hundreds, or thousands of people moving together toward a shared goal to create big change.

New report recommends Kansas implement bicycle helmet law to help prevent deaths, injuries
Even when the injured has insurance, his/her high claims for a serious injury may increase future premiums in the employer's insurance pool.
And if the person ends up disabled and in need of benefits, that money either comes from an insurance policy other employees pay into, or from Medicaid, which taxpayers support.
So anyway you look at it, serious injuries affect all of our pocketbooks. If there are proven ways to avoid them, why not use them?
