About Our Local Food
Our Local Food is a program of the Kansas Rural Center, a non-profit organization that promotes the long-term health of the land and its people through research, education, and advocacy. The KRC cultivates grassroots support for public policies that encourage family farming and stewardship of soil and water. The KRC is committed to economically viable, environmentally sound, and socially sustainable rural culture.
Our MISSION: To develop the market for local and sustainable agricultural products.
We are doing this in three ways:
* Educating eaters about the value of locally grown products.
* Fostering relationships between food service operations and agricultural producers. by providing networking resources, communication tools and marketing materials we hope to enhance the capacity of restaurants and other food service operations to take advantage of our rich agricultural region. Growing trusting relationships between farmers and buyers is a primary focus of KRVF.
* Providing a branding tool for locally grown products. The “Our Local Food – Kaw River Valley” label means the product (or main raw ingredients for the product) were grown in the 7-county region of the Kaw River Valley. If someone from the South Central/Twin Rivers chapter of Our Local Food sells in our region, they are labeled with South Central/Twin Rivers sticker instead. This allows the consumer to decide for themselves what local means, as well as offering transparency to keep the consumer informed and aware of their source.
