Addiction a chronic brain disease, not just bad behavior
I think many people do not understand how pervasive addictive behavior is in our society. It is important to understand all the factors - environmental and biological to name a few - that feed into addictive behavior. Talking about the science is so important. At the Bert Nash Center we help people understand addictive behavior and also provide tools they can use to move forward in thier lives.

We are finalizing the numbers on the amount raised. It is hard to estimate the number of attendees since there was no admission charge. I know we had a big crowd in front of the stage and the children's activities were very popular.

New guidelines for depression treatment -- tailor it!
Both the map and article demonstrate the importance of educating the public about depression and the treatments that are available. In the past year, difficult economic circumstances have contributed to an increase in the number of patients with depression that we see here at the Bert Nash Center.

This should be a great event! We hope the community will join us in celebrating our 60th anniversary.
Good physical health is the basis for good mental health. Come out and run, walk, or just join us for the "Bash" for great food and music downtown.

Line for free dental care at Lawrence clinic begins at midnight
This shows clearly that more dental clinics need to be offered. Kudos to the dentists and the Douglas County Dental Clinic for taking this on. I hope this effort can be sustained.

Family of 7 lodged in motel they call home
I wanted to highlight an organization that is working on this problem - Family Promise of Lawrence. Family Promise is a non-profit organization that works to help homeless families find secure housing and employment. Family Promise partners with local churches and provides temporary housing, food and resources for families to 'get back on their feet'. How my own *Eat, Pray, Love* moment in Bali led to WellCommons
Jane, thank you for sharing this wonderful story. I am encouraged as I see the growth of WellCommons and ongoing sharing of health information and stories. At the Bert Nash Center, we strive to reduce the stigma associated with mental health problems. I believe WellCommons helps us do that.
