Just how DO you train to do 100 pushups?

Report on The Chiropractic Experience:
Last week, Dr. Mark completed week 6, and claims that he feels able to drop down and rep out the required 100 push-ups. Admittedly, he has not yet attempted this feat. However, when he returns next week from his family vacation, he will be put to the test with video to follow.
I (Dr. Sean) am in week 3 with my 1-handed challenge. I've improved my max from approx. 10 push- ups to 18. I hope to achieve a max of 25 within the next couple of weeks. And "when" I get there, we will video that and send proof. (I really don't see myself being able to climb higher than 25).
The rest of the girls continue to work on it, and I will make mention of their progress next time.
Good luck to all of the other participants! We enjoy reading about all of your progress!

Free fluoride varnish clinics for children in May, June and July

I must admit that I am not well educated on the effects of fluoride, though I have heard many times that it is not as safe as we are led to believe. I remember hearing of a book years ago while in school; it is called The Fluoride Deception by Christopher Bryson. I have not read it, only blurbs here and there. Some of them mention fluoride-related nerve damage caused in lab rats, while others speak of cover-ups and misinformation. Mr. Bryson even says fluoride's supposed benefits are "scientific fraud on a grand and global scale." I'd be interested to hear any "pro-fluoride" dentists' take on the topic. Like I said before, I consider myself not well educated on the matter.

The challenge is on!! How many in Lawrence & Douglas County can do 100 pushups?

To be honest Jane, I haven't maxed out in quite sometime; but I would guess I'm somewhere in the 70's. But I was thinking I might use this challenge to improve my "one-handed" push ups. I can do about 10 on each arm. So maybe by the end of 6 weeks, that number could be pretty high. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Oh, and just as I expected, most of the office will also be doing this challenge. Lol! Talk to you soon!

The Importance of Wearing Sunscreen

Great post! Sunburn provides NO benefit and is NEVER good for the skin/health!...and it hurts =(
As you mentioned, getting an adequate amount of daily Vitamin D is extremely important and is possibly the most important thing one can do for her health; and sunshine is absolutely the best way to accomplish this. But like you said, too much sun can be problematic. The only thing that worries me about sunscreen is the potential chemical threat that comes with continuous application. Unfortunately, many sunscreens are loaded with toxic chemicals that can actually accelerate skin cancer, or get into the bloodstream where they can disrupt hormones. My thought is that the best ways to prevent sunburn are to avoid staying in the sun for prolonged periods of time, and by covering up. A cap or visor can be real handy for protecting the face and eyes from direct sunlight, and most cotton clothing actually provides an SPF of 15. So, do we really need to wear sunscreen at all? I would say that on days when extended periods of sun exposure are unavoidable, absolutely YES! However, understanding that most of the commercially available sunscreens contain potentially toxic chemicals such as OMC (Octyl methoxycinnamate), Octocrylene, Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Octinoxatre, and Octisalate, it would be better for one's health to purchase sunscreen that is free of such chemicals. Thanks to the Environmental Working Group, one is now able to see exactly how her sunscreen rates for safe ingredients and efficacy. EWG's Sunscreen Guide is available at www.ewg.org.
Another important point to consider is that fresh, raw vegetables also provide one's body with an abundance of powerful anti-oxidants that will help fight the free radicals caused by sun damage that can lead to burns and cancer. Consuming a healthy diet full of natural antioxidants has always been a useful strategy in not only staying healthy but also providing the body with the resources to counter damage from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
My recommendation would be to get at least some sun exposure daily. You mentioned the amount of such exposure should be 15-30 minutes. I think that's perfect! But limit overexposure, and cover up and use sunscreen sparingly when possible. And when sunscreen is necessary, take care to employ the most toxicity-FREE sunscreen available. My first half marathon

Congratulations Nick! As a runner, I know there was so much preparation that went into your 1:52:30. What a feeling of accomplishment you must have felt upon crossing that finish line! When I ran my 1st half marathon back in October 2009, I had a ridiculously ambitious goal of 1:30:00. I finished in 1:38, and then ran a 1:37 the following spring. Two weeks ago in KC I trimmed 3 more minutes off my time, running 1:34. That 1:30:00 gets closer with each race; and I'm confident that you will soon not only conquer 1:50, but reach well into the 1:40's and beyond!! Keep it up!

We all carry cancer cells: Part Two, demystifying Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids

Thank you for sharing this, Jane. Certainly our intake of Omega 6 fatty acids has gotten out of hand, especially in relation to our intake of Omega 3. Fish oil is one of the important supplements I recommend my patients take; and always those supplements are much higher in Omega 3's; this is because of the imbalance in our dietary ratio that you mentioned.
I'm glad you touched on how the corn and soy diets being fed to the chickens and cows that we consume affect the nutritional content of the meat, eggs, milk, etc. Most health advocates agree that if someone has to make a choice to buy their meat organic, or their produce organic, they should always go with the organic meat. Animals raised on poor diets, and given hormones and antibiotics, will reek havoc on the health of those who consume them.
Anyway, thanks for raising awareness!

Lose Weight: Eat Breakfast

It may not be a low-fat regimen, but it sounds as though the majority of the fats you are consuming (salmon, flaxseed, etc) are healthy fats. It sounds delicious. I would recommend fresh, wild fish as opposed to the farmed variety due to potentially high mercury levels, and other toxicities.

Also, I have a question about the whole grains.: When you boil them in the morning, does this kill off the cultures that they soaked up from the yogurt live-culture whey?
