Cordley Chess Club checks their mates at Cottin's Hardware Farmers Market
- on August 15, 2012
It’s been a great summer run, but with fall in the air and classes back in session, the Cordley Elementary School Chess Club will play their last official public games of the season at Cottin’s Hardware Farmers Market this Thursday, August 16, 2012.
Since the first weeks in May, Cordley students have set the tables and taken on all challengers’ center stage at Cottin’s Hardware Farmers Market. Throughout the summer students from more than a dozen other schools joined the fun, helping to create an ongoing weekly multi-generational chess tournament where young and old, talented and untalented, serious and not-so-serious players shared a moment or two in time and got to know each other over a friendly game of checks and mates.
Cordley chess club parents chipped in together to purchase almost a dozen tournament chess sets and a couple of pop-up canopies to cover the tournament area. Cottin’s Hardware & Rental staff members took responsibility for setting up the chess tables each week and volunteers assisted in cleaning up the area at the close of each market. The students benefited, not only from the opportunity to hone their skills on a weekly basis, but also from the chance to practiced social skills, patience and sportsman etiquette with community members from all walks of life.
If you haven’t had a chance to sit across the table from one of these talented and friendly gladiators, come on down to Cottin’s Hardware Farmers Market this Thursday, August 16 and pull up a chair. The tables will be set and ready for play from 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm. Along with friendly chess games, Cottin’s Hardware Farmers Market will boast a wide array of fresh local produce. Mojo National will be on hand to set the mood with their eclectic mix of Django jazz and Global Café will fire up the grill once again to serve hot delicious green-chili laced entrees to hungry market patrons.

Lone Star Farms will have apples, potatoes, cucumbers and heirloom tomatoes. Other market highlights include fresh, non-gmo corn from Willing Horse Farms, Asian pears and assorted apples from Fieldstone Orchard, summer squash, peppers, okra, and more from Avery’s Produce, and fresh bake goods and assorted produce from Martin Farm.
Abundant Life Naturals will show up with their wonderful selection of organic, fair-trade loose leaf teas, coupled with some of their own garden produce and Falley Harley Hills Farm will arrive with the remainder of their organically grown heirloom watermelons and musk melons.
