On Thursday, August 2, 2012 Cottin’s Hardware Farmers Market will move their farmers, musicians and weekly hot food vendor down the road to the Douglas County Fair Grounds, 2110 Harper Street, to create the second annual Farmers Market @ the County Fair event. The market is a joint project of Cottin’s Hardware & Rental, The Merc Community Market & Deli, Douglas County Food Policy Council, First State Bank, Free State Brewing Company, Frontier Farm Credit, Heritage Tractor, Hy-Vee, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness subcommittee, Anderson Rentals, Inc., Our Local Food – Kaw Valley and the Douglas County Fair.

The market runs from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm and will be located in the grassy knoll between the two main fair entrance driveways directly off of Harper Street. Patron parking will be available next to the market as well as in the usual fairground parking spots. The Douglas County Food Policy Council will host a free produce check station inside the Dreher Building, adjacent to the market arena, so market goers will be free to make purchases and then continue on into the regular fairgrounds, knowing their market selections will be cool, crisp and fresh once they are ready to return home.

The Chef's Challenge will begin at 5:30 pm featuring three local chef's at the Farmers Market @ the County Fair, Thursday, August 2, 2012.

There will be a Chef’s Challenge at 5:30 pm featuring three local chefs. Chef’s participating this year are: 2011 Chefs’ Challenge winner Chef Russell Iverson, Free State Brewing Company, Dave Nigro, Hy-Vee (Clinton Pkwy.) and Wallace Cochran, The Merc Community Market & Deli. Chefs will demonstrate seasonal recipes using locally-sourced ingredients, including many products from the market vendors. 200 sample plates will be offered to judges and market patrons and the winner will be chosen by both public and professional opinion. Aside from sheer entertainment, the Chef’s Challenge is designed to showcase many of the wonderful local food options available in the Douglas County area. Chef’s will speak about their food choices and share cooking techniques and tips to encourage experimentation and diversity amongst typical market shoppers. Straying from the mainstream of standard fare will be Chef Dave, as he whips up a delightful entrée with goat meat from Red Tractor Farm.

Entertainment during the market will be provided by several local musicians who willingly donate their time and talents to sit in the heat of the summer in support of our local farmers and producers. Farmers Market @ the County Fair musicians include: Bill Crahan and John Lomas who will be playing dueling guitars and various other stringed instruments from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Crahan and Lomas can be seen around town on a somewhat regular basis and often play sets accompanied by various vocal musicians up in the Hawks Nest at the Oread Hotel on Thursday evenings. Following Crahan and Lomas will be the ever popular acoustical band, Fresh Picked with renowned instrumentalist Steve Mason, Lauralyn Bodle, Lisa Grossman and Matt Kirby. These multifaceted musicians play in various bands and groups around the area, but joined forces last year to form Fresh Picked for the sole purpose of playing regularly at Cottin’s Hardware Farmers market along with other food related venues. Fresh Picked will play from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

Along with the standard fair food selections up on the main causeway, Global Café will be in the market arena offering pressed sandwiches and other entrée items made with locally sourced ingredients and 4-H members will be selling bottled drinks to support their many community focused projects.

The Farmers Market @ the County Fair will host a great selection of 32 local vendors including two local middle school gardens and seven educational and information booths.

Produce from Liberty Memorial Central Middle School's Central Garden and Southwest Middle School's Garden Project will be available at the second annual Farmers Market @ the County Fair, Thursday, August 2, 2012.
