Headquarters Counseling Center Assists Public Television
When Kansas City's public television station, KCPT, determined it was time to promote suicide prevention, who did they call? Headquarters Counseling Center in Lawrence.
Since 1969, HQCC has provided a wide range of services locally: referrals to needed services, Children's Safety Education programs, a bereavement group, "life support" counseling available free, 24/7 for any concern of any age person, and more.
In 2001, the center began answering another call. The center provides counseling for people from all Kansas area codes who reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The center was recruited for this role by members of the American Association of Suicidology, the professional organization dedicated to research, counseling, and training to prevent suicide.
So when KCPT staff were seeking experts for their series on suicide prevention and bereavement, they were told to contact Headquarters Counseling Center. The center's director is featured in segments one and three of the four-part series, which is part of The Local Show, aired on Thursday evenings.
The first three segments of the series "Mental Health Awareness: Suicide" are available at http://kcpt.org/blog/2012/02/14/mental-health-awareness-suicide-part-three/ The final segment will be aired on 2/23/12. Soon after, the episodes will be edited into one 30-minutes special broadcast.
